Wicking Garden Beds on Sydney's North Shore & Ryde
Across the leafy North Shore and the Ryde district — Ryde, Gladesville, Hunters Hill, Lane Cove, Wahroonga and St Ives — UrbanVeg builds premium self-watering wicking beds for established gardens that want to grow their own food. In a part of Sydney defined by big trees, shade and clay soil, a raised wicking bed is often the smartest way to get a productive veggie patch going.

Why North Shore and Ryde gardens grow better with a wicking bed
The North Shore's mature trees and heavy clay soil are lovely to live among but tricky to grow vegetables in: roots compete for water, shade moves across the yard through the day, and clay either waterlogs or sets like concrete. A raised wicking bed lifts your veg out of all that. It gives the plants their own clean growing mix and a reservoir that keeps moisture steady from below, away from thirsty tree roots and the clay's mood swings, and being raised you can place it in the best pocket of light in the garden. The result is a reliable, low-fuss harvest in a setting that usually fights you.
Premium beds that suit an established garden
In a well-loved North Shore garden a bed has to look the part. Every UrbanVeg bed is built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with an iron-oxide finish that settles naturally into a green, established yard, fully lined over a sub-irrigation base, and made to last — no cheap CCA pine, no arsenic or chrome near your food. We build single beds, accessible heights and larger multi-bed gardens to match the scale of the space.

North Shore and Ryde wicking bed FAQs
Will a wicking bed work near established trees and shade?
Yes — being raised and self-contained, it keeps the veg above competing tree roots and lets you place it in the sunniest spot. It is one of the best options for a leafy, established garden.
Do wicking beds handle heavy clay soil?
They do. The bed has its own growing mix and reservoir, so the clay underneath does not matter — you get an even root zone regardless.
Can you build accessible beds for older gardeners?
Yes — we build raised, reach-from-both-sides beds at a comfortable height, including fully wheelchair-accessible ones. Tell us who is gardening and we will design around them.
