Wicking Garden Beds on Sydney's North Shore & Ryde
The North Shore and Ryde corridor, taking in Ryde, West Ryde, Eastwood, Epping,
Gladesville, North Sydney, Castlecrag, Riverview, St Ives, Wahroonga and North
Parramatta, is heavily treed and leafy, which is lovely but means dappled light,
competitive tree roots and shaded rooftops. Wicking beds suit these conditions well:
they give vegetables their own sealed water and nutrient reservoir out of reach of greedy
tree roots, and the raised, fully lined design works on the rooftops and terraces common
in North Shore strata living.
Ryde in particular has been a strong area for us through Ryde Council's Edible Gardens
in Schools program, alongside residential gardens across the wider North Shore. The
projects below show that range.
