Having completed several successful school installations for Ryde Council, we were pleased to be commissioned again — this time for a single large wicking bed at Epping Boys School. Word keeps spreading between North Shore schools about how well these gardens work, and a repeat commission like this is the best endorsement we could ask for.

The reason schools keep coming back is simple: watering becomes a breeze. Our raised wicking beds store their water in a sealed reservoir in the base, and the plants draw it up from below as they need it. That makes day-to-day care almost effortless and, crucially, looks after the garden over the school holiday periods — the stretch that defeats most school veggie patches. Even a single large bed makes a genuinely useful teaching resource. There's room for a class to plant a good variety, watch it grow and harvest real vegetables, and the bed becomes a focal point for lessons on where food comes from and how plants thrive. The leafy North Shore can be a tricky place to grow vegetables — established trees, shade and heavy clay all work against an in-ground patch — which is another reason a raised wicking bed makes sense here. Like all our beds, it's built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with our food-safe iron-oxide finish — no cheap CCA pine anywhere near where the students grow their food — fully lined over the wicking reservoir and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium, so it produces well from the very first planting. Because the bed effectively waters itself, it stays productive between lessons and across the breaks with very little staff time.
