Ryde Council commissioned another school install through their Edible Gardens in Schools initiative, and this time Gladesville Public School became the proud owner of one of the largest wicking beds we build. It was placed deliberately alongside the school's existing in-ground vegetable beds — and that placement turned out to be the most interesting part of the project.

The new bed is built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with our food-safe iron-oxide finish — no cheap CCA pine near where the students grow their food — fully lined over a sealed wicking reservoir and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium. Being a large self-watering raised bed, we expect it to outperform the existing in-ground patch substantially, with yields in the order of two to five times those of a comparable non-irrigated bed.

That side-by-side arrangement makes for a brilliant teaching resource. Placing a large self-watering bed right next to traditional in-ground beds, as we did at this Gladesville school, gives students a clear, living lesson in why raised wicking beds grow so much more. The contrast — same school, same weather, same young gardeners, very different results — is striking, and it teaches the "why" far better than any worksheet could.

The reason for the difference comes down to the reservoir. Water sits in a sealed base and the plants draw it up from below exactly as they need it, so the soil stays evenly moist instead of swinging between waterlogged and bone-dry. Just as importantly for a school, that reservoir keeps the bed watered through the holidays, so the garden stays productive year-round rather than dying back whenever the school empties out for a few weeks.

For the students it means a reliable, high-yielding bed they can plant, tend and harvest across the seasons, and a real-world demonstration of the growing principles they're being taught. For the staff, it's a low-maintenance addition that largely looks after itself.
