Wicking Garden Beds in the Sutherland Shire
The Sutherland Shire is where UrbanVeg began, and it is still where we build more wicking beds than anywhere else. We are based in Miranda, so the whole Shire — from the Cronulla beaches to the bushland edges of Menai and Engadine — is effectively our backyard. If you want a vegetable garden that thrives through a Shire summer without becoming a daily chore, a wicking bed is the answer, and chances are we have already built one a few streets from you.

Why Sutherland Shire gardens grow better with a wicking bed
Most of the Shire sits on sandy, free-draining soil left over from its coastal and bushland geology. That is lovely to dig, but it is also why so many local veggie patches struggle: water and nutrients drain straight through before the roots can use them, and one hot northerly or a week away in summer can undo a whole season. A wicking bed flips that problem on its head. It holds a sealed reservoir of water in the base and lets the plants draw moisture up from below as they need it, so the root zone stays evenly damp while the surface stays dry. In practice a Shire garden then keeps producing right through the dry months on a top-up every week or two, instead of wilting the first time you skip a watering.
Premium beds, built for the coast and built to last
Plenty of landscapers will knock a raised bed together from cheap CCA-treated pine. We do it differently. Every UrbanVeg bed is made from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber coloured with an iron-oxide preservative — no arsenic or chrome anywhere near your food — and fully lined over a proper sub-irrigation system. Near the coast that matters even more: salt air and damp punish a poorly built bed, so we over-engineer the joinery and framing to give you a garden that still looks good in ten years, not two.
What we build across the Shire
No two Shire gardens are the same, and neither are our beds. We have built single courtyard planters for units in Caringbah, tall accessible beds for seniors in Sutherland who wanted to keep gardening without the bending, arch-trellis and bench-seat features in Cronulla, and U-shaped kitchen gardens in Gymea Bay and Jannali. Whether you have a paved courtyard, a sloping backyard or a big sunny block, we size and shape the bed to suit the space rather than the other way round.
Suburbs we cover
Cronulla, Caringbah, Miranda, Sutherland, Gymea, Gymea Bay, Jannali, Como, Bangor, Menai, Engadine, Woronora, Sylvania, Kirrawee, Loftus, Alfords Point and Illawong. Based in Miranda, we can usually quote and install quickly anywhere in the Shire.
Sutherland Shire wicking bed FAQs
Will a wicking bed cope with sandy Shire soil?
That is exactly what it is designed for. The sealed reservoir holds the water sandy soil normally loses, so you water far less and grow far more.
Do you really cover the whole Shire?
Yes — based in Miranda, we build coast to bushland, usually within a short lead time.
How long does it take to get a wicking bed?
Most jobs can be arranged within a 4 week period, often sooner. Tell us about your space and we will come back within 24 hours.
