3 Wicking Beds for a School

Eastwood Heights Public School secured a sustainability grant and put it to excellent use, commissioning three large wicking beds to serve as a hands-on educational resource. It's a great example of a school turning funding into something lasting — a living classroom the students will use for years.

The three raised beds are built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with our food-safe iron-oxide finish — no cheap CCA pine near where the children grow their food — fully lined over a sealed wicking reservoir and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium. Because each bed stores its water in the base and the plants draw it up from below, the garden won't require watering over the school holidays, and acts as a reliable, low-fuss teaching aid through the year.

What makes this install especially nice is the composting angle. The school added vermi-composters to the beds, letting worms turn the scraps left over from harvesting straight back into the soil as rich, natural fertiliser. It closes the loop beautifully: students harvest their vegetables, the offcuts go to the worms, and the worms feed the next crop — a complete, visible cycle happening right there in the bed.

That turns three beds into a proper living lesson. Schools across the North Shore are increasingly treating raised beds as outdoor classrooms, and this sustainability-funded set gives Eastwood students a hands-on education in growing, composting and nutrition all at once, with real vegetables to pick at the end of it. It's the kind of learning that sticks, because the children are doing it rather than reading about it.

The self-watering design is what makes it manageable for the school. Because the beds water themselves from the reservoir below, they stay productive through the holidays and need very little staff time, so teachers can fold the garden into lessons without it becoming a chore.

Built from durable, food-safe timber, these raised garden beds are made to last through years of everyday school use. UrbanVeg builds raised garden beds and self-watering vegetable beds for schools across Eastwood and the North Shore. If your school has grant funding or a sustainability goal and would like a productive teaching garden, we'd love to help you plan it.
