Why Eastern Suburbs gardens grow better with a wicking bed

Eastern gardens face two problems at once.  The soils are often thin and sandy over sandstone, draining fast and drying out in the sea breeze, and the gardens themselves are small — a courtyard, a terrace strip, a rooftop — with no room to waste.  A wicking bed answers both.  Its sealed reservoir keeps water at the roots where the coastal wind cannot strip it away, so the bed needs only an occasional top-up, and because it grows intensively in a compact footprint you get a serious crop from a small space.  The dry surface also gives weeds and pests less to work with — handy when the garden is right outside the back door.
