Wicking Garden Beds in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs
Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, from Coogee, Maroubra and Bronte to Bellevue Hill, Dover Heights and Zetland, present two challenges for a vegetable gardener: very little ground space, and a hot, salt-laden coastal aspect that dries pots out fast. Wicking beds
answer both. They turn courtyards, rooftops and terraces into real growing space, and the underground reservoir keeps roots cool and watered through the fierce Eastern Suburbs sun, so an apartment or terrace garden in Coogee or Maroubra can be genuinely productive.
We have built rooftop and courtyard beds throughout the Eastern Suburbs, several with
arch trellises and bench seats that suit the entertaining-focused gardens common in the
area. The projects below show what is achievable on a small eastern-suburbs footprint.
