Wicking Garden Beds in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs
From Bondi and Bronte to Coogee, Maroubra and the clifftops of Dover Heights, the Eastern Suburbs are a beautiful but demanding place to grow vegetables. Space is tight, the salt wind is relentless and the possums are bold — but with the right bed, an eastern courtyard or terrace garden can produce a remarkable amount of food. UrbanVeg builds premium, self-watering wicking beds designed for exactly these conditions.

Why Eastern Suburbs gardens grow better with a wicking bed
Eastern gardens face two problems at once. The soils are often thin and sandy over sandstone, draining fast and drying out in the sea breeze, and the gardens themselves are small — a courtyard, a terrace strip, a rooftop — with no room to waste. A wicking bed answers both. Its sealed reservoir keeps water at the roots where the coastal wind cannot strip it away, so the bed needs only an occasional top-up, and because it grows intensively in a compact footprint you get a serious crop from a small space. The dry surface also gives weeds and pests less to work with — handy when the garden is right outside the back door.
Premium beds that stand up to salt and sea air
Coastal gardens are hard on cheap timber, and a flimsy bed by the sea will not last. Every UrbanVeg bed is built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber finished with an iron-oxide preservative — no arsenic or chrome near your food — and fully lined over a sub-irrigation base. We build them sturdy and frame them properly so they hold their shape and their looks through years of salt air, and we can add netting frames to keep determined possums and birds off the harvest.
What we build across the Eastern Suburbs
We have built possum-proof, netting-framed beds in Bronte, neat raised beds in Coogee and Maroubra, and compact planters tucked into terrace courtyards across the area. Whether you want a single herb planter by the kitchen, a productive bed along a fence line or a feature garden for an entertaining space, we design it to fit the footprint you have and the look you want.
Suburbs we cover
Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee, Clovelly, Maroubra, Randwick, Kensington, Waverley, Bellevue Hill, Dover Heights, Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Paddington and Woollahra.
Eastern Suburbs wicking bed FAQs
Will a wicking bed cope with the salt and wind near the coast?
Yes. The reservoir keeps moisture at the roots where the sea breeze cannot dry it out, and we build the beds sturdy enough to take the coastal conditions.
Can you keep possums and birds off?
We can build an integrated netting frame over the bed, so you protect the harvest without losing easy access to it.
I only have a small courtyard — is it worth it?
Definitely. Wicking beds grow intensively in a small footprint, so a courtyard or terrace can be surprisingly productive. Tell us about your space and we will work out what fits.
