This was a second project for a vegan couple in Bangor. They wanted to grow herbs within easy reach of the kitchen and make use of a suntrap outside a window on their deck.

Our courtyard planters are perfect for decks, balconies and other hard surfaces. We built this one at 65cm high instead of the usual 85cm to avoid blocking out the window; still a good height to avoid most bending though.

Being self watering, herbs thrive in these planters - they are suitable for lemongrass, chilli, sage, oregano, mint, basil, coriander and most other herbs and spices that can grow in the Australian temperate climate.

Being a vegan customer, we were careful to use no animal by-products in the soil mix and made extensive use of seaweed and plant based fertilisers.

A deck-height planter like this is perfect for Bangor homes that want fresh herbs and greens right at the back door. Sitting in a window suntrap and watering itself from the reservoir below, it keeps a steady supply going with no daily watering, even through the warm Shire summer.

It is a tidy, good-looking way to grow on a deck or patio where a full bed will not fit. Built from durable, food-safe timber, this raised planter box is made to last outdoors. UrbanVeg builds raised planter boxes and self-watering garden beds across Bangor and the Sutherland Shire.
