Cucumbers Galore!

We are growing about this amount of cucumbers every week at the moment in well under 1 square metre of growing space. They seem to love our self watering wicking beds, and the special rich growing medium we install them with. The dry soil surface keeps those pests and disease away!
How do you get this many from under a square metre?
Three things. First, grow vertically — train cucumbers up a trellis or strings so the plant puts its energy into fruit, not sprawl, and air can move freely around the leaves.
Second, keep the water absolutely steady: cucumbers are over 95% water, and the even moisture of a wicking bed prevents the bitterness and misshapen fruit that come from the wet-dry cycle of hand-watering.
Third, keep picking. The more you harvest, the more the plant produces — leave cucumbers on the vine to grow oversized and the plant slows right down, so pick them young and often.
Feed lightly every few weeks once fruiting starts, choose a productive variety like Lebanese or burpless for Sydney summers, and one or two healthy plants will keep a household in cucumbers for months.
