A lovely couple in West Wollongong wanted to make use of a sunny spot at the end of their garden, and to keep growing comfortably despite some mobility challenges. Tall beds reachable from both sides are ideal for that — there's no bending, and everything is within easy reach whichever side you approach from. With this much growing area, they'll soon be sharing vegetables up the street.

Sitting below the escarpment at West Wollongong, the garden gets good sun, and raising the beds to a comfortable height makes a large plot easy to work no matter your mobility. Each is a wicking bed, holding its water in a reservoir underneath and feeding it up to the roots, so through the humid Illawarra summers the soil stays evenly moist without daily watering, while a built-in composter keeps it fed from the household's scraps.

Across the three beds there's room for a broad, productive mix — tomatoes, beans, brassicas, leafy greens, root veg and herbs — all lifted clear of the heavier ground and easy to tend from a standing or seated position.
