A childcare centre in Punchbowl asked us for a wicking bed so their little ones could grow some veggies of their own. It's such an important thing for young children to learn — that carrots don't come from Coles, but from soil, sun, water and a bit of patience — and there's no better way to teach it than letting them grow and pick their own.
For a childcare setting, the bed has to do two things at once: be safe and sturdy around busy little hands, and be genuinely low-maintenance for the educators looking after it. Our raised wicking beds are built for exactly that. This one is made from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with our food-safe iron-oxide finish — no cheap CCA pine near where children will be planting and picking — with smooth, solid sides that stand up to everyday use in an early learning yard.
What makes it so easy to care for is the wicking system underneath. Water is stored in a sealed reservoir in the base of the bed, and the plants draw it up from below as they need it. That means the garden effectively waters itself between top-ups, surviving weekends and holidays without anyone having to remember to water it — a real relief in a busy centre where the days fill up quickly. The bed is fully lined and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium, so it grows well from the very first planting.
The learning value is the heart of it. Growing their own vegetables teaches little ones where food really comes from, and gives them something hands-on to look after day by day — tucking in seeds, watching the first shoots appear, and eventually picking what they've grown. It's the kind of simple, sensory, outdoor experience that sticks with children, and it quietly turns snack time into a small lesson of its own.
In the warm Canterbury-Bankstown climate, the bed will grow easy, satisfying crops that children love to pick — cherry tomatoes, snow peas, strawberries, lettuce and herbs all do well and reward little gardeners quickly. The steady moisture from the reservoir keeps things growing right through the hot months, when an ordinary planter would dry out between visits.
Built from durable, food-safe timber and designed to look after itself, it's a raised garden bed made to last around busy little hands for years to come. If you run an early learning centre in Punchbowl or South-Western Sydney and would like a safe, productive growing patch for your children, we'd love to help you plan it.
