We installed four large wicking beds at Plumpton Public School, for a forward-thinking head teacher who wanted an effective teaching solution — a garden that would genuinely inspire kids to learn about growing vegetables, not just sit in the corner of the yard.

From the first conversation it was clear the school saw this as a hands-on classroom, and we built it to match that ambition: four generous beds with plenty of growing space for whole classes to work in at once.

The brief in Western Sydney always comes back to water. Plumpton summers are hot and dry, and the hardest stretch for any school garden is the holidays, when there's no one on site to keep things alive. This is exactly where our self-watering wicking beds earn their place.

Water is stored in a sealed reservoir in the base of each bed, and the plants draw it up from below as they need it. In practice the beds generally won't need watering between semesters at all — the staff simply plug a hose into each bed for a few minutes before the holidays, and the reservoir does the rest.
