The NSW School of Languages in Petersham commissioned two wicking beds to sit in front of a mural on the grounds, where they'd do double duty — as a teaching aid and as a working garden supplying herbs, salad greens and other vegetables to the institution. It's a lovely use of the product: productive, good-looking and genuinely useful all at once.
Wicking beds are a great fit for schools, TAFEs and universities precisely because they're so incredibly low-maintenance. Each bed stores its water in a sealed reservoir in the base, and the plants draw it up from below as they need it, so watering over the school holidays isn't really required. For an institution where no one wants to be hand-watering a garden over the breaks, that self-sufficiency is the whole point.
Both beds are built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with our food-safe iron-oxide finish — no cheap CCA pine near produce that's destined for the kitchen — fully lined over the wicking reservoir and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium, so they crop well from the outset. Set in a sunny spot in front of the mural, they're as much a feature of the space as a food source.
Schools, colleges and community sites right across the Inner West suit raised beds like these, and a setup like this one in Petersham earns its place on both fronts: a hands-on teaching tool where students can plant, tend and harvest, and a reliable little herb-and-salad garden the institution actually draws on. Fresh herbs and greens, grown on site and picked as needed, are a satisfying thing for any learning community to have.
Because a self-watering raised bed keeps the garden alive between terms with so little fuss, it's always ready for the next lesson or the next harvest — no catching up after a long break. That low-maintenance reliability is what lets a busy institution use the beds rather than just admire them.
Built from durable, food-safe timber, these raised garden beds are made to last through years of use in a public setting. UrbanVeg builds raised garden beds and self-watering vegetable beds for schools, colleges and community sites across Petersham and the Inner West. If your school or institution would like a productive, low-maintenance garden, we'd love to help you plan it.
