Out at Manchester Square, a couple were turning a paddock on their acreage into a proper growing space — a shed going up on the slab, a young orchard taking shape, and room for a serious vegetable garden at the heart of it. Our brief was the kitchen-garden centrepiece: four of our broad premium timber raised wicking beds, set out across the open ground with space to walk and work between them.

The beds are built from kiln-dried, iron-oxide-preserved vegetable-grade timber — the same food-safe timber we use on every job, chosen to weather beautifully and last out in the elements rather than rot away like cheap pine. Each one is fully lined and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium, sitting over a WaterUps wicking base. The reservoir lets the beds self-water from below, which matters all the more on acreage, where a quick daily hand-water isn't always practical and the summers run hot and dry.

The vertical element is what gives this garden its character. Tall mesh trellis panels rise from the bed ends, ready to carry climbing beans, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers and the like up off the soil and into the light. Growing vertically keeps fruit clean and easy to pick, improves airflow, and makes the most of the footprint — a lot of harvest from a compact bed.

We also built two steel-mesh archways, one linking each pair of beds into a walk-through tunnel. Train climbers up and over and they become living, productive arches you stroll beneath — equal parts practical and lovely to look at, and a natural way to tie the four beds together into a single garden room out in the paddock.

Sitting alongside the new shed and orchard, the beds give this Manchester Square property a complete, hard-working kitchen garden that should feed the household for years. If you've got acreage or a rural block in the works and want a self-watering vegetable garden built to last, we'd love to help you plan it.
