A returning Mortdale customer had a sunny spot beneath her kitchen window and, after being so happy with the bed we'd installed for her earlier, asked us back to add a dedicated herb planter. A raised herb planter under a sunny kitchen window is one of the most useful things you can add to a garden — it puts fresh herbs and salad literally within arm's reach of the stove.

We built this one tall and narrow to fit neatly beneath the window, at a height that needs no bending to pick or tend. As a wicking planter it holds its water in a reservoir underneath and wicks it up to the roots, so the herbs stay lush between waterings and don't dry out and bolt the way pots on a windowsill tend to.

Mortdale sits in the warm, sheltered St George area, so a planter like this will keep parsley, basil, coriander, chives, thyme and a bit of salad going for most of the year with only the occasional top-up. Returning customers like this one are common once people see how little a self-watering planter actually asks of them.

Our planters are made from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with a food-safe finish, built to hold their looks and last for years right up against the house. If you'd like fresh herbs by the kitchen in Mortdale, Oatley or elsewhere across the St George area, we'd love to help you set one up.
