For this Minto childcare centre we designed and installed four premium timber raised garden beds, each fitted with its own sturdy trellis for climbing vegetables. The centre wanted more than a token planter box in the corner of the yard — they wanted a proper, productive growing space the children could be part of every day, and something built well enough to stand up to years of small hands, sun and weather.

Quality starts with the timber. Each bed is built from kiln-dried, iron-oxide-preserved, vegetable-grade timber — chosen because it's genuinely food-safe and made to last outdoors, rather than the cheap CCA-treated pine you'll find under most off-the-shelf garden beds. It weathers to a warm, natural finish that settles nicely into a play space, and it won't leach anything you wouldn't want near food the children are going to eat. Every bed is then fully lined and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium, a rich mix designed specifically for growing vegetables well from the very first season.

Underneath it all is a WaterUps wicking base, and this is what makes the beds so well suited to a busy early learning environment. Rather than watering from the top, water sits in a reservoir in the base of the bed and the plants draw it up from below exactly as they need it. The beds effectively self-water between top-ups, which is a real help for educators who already have their hands full — there's no need for daily watering, and it's very hard to overwater or underwater. Just as importantly, that steady supply of moisture keeps the vegetables growing right through a hot, dry south-west Sydney summer, when ordinary garden beds tend to struggle.

The trellises turn each bed into a hands-on growing wall. Beans, peas, snow peas, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes climb up and over through the season, giving the children something that visibly changes from one morning to the next — something to plant, water, measure and look after. Growing vertically also keeps the produce clean and up off the soil, improves airflow around the plants, and makes the most of the available footprint, so a compact bed still delivers a generous harvest.

There's a lovely learning dimension to all of this. It's edible education pitched right at child height: the little ones tuck in the seeds, watch them sprout and climb, check on their progress each day, and eventually get to pick and taste vegetables they've grown with their own hands. That journey — from seed to snack — teaches patience, care and where food actually comes from, and it brings a sensory, outdoor, get-your-hands-dirty richness to the centre's program that's hard to recreate any other way.

Set out across the yard, the four beds give this Minto centre a complete little kitchen garden the whole community can enjoy, with educators, children and visiting families all sharing in what it produces. Built to last and easy to care for, it's the kind of space that keeps giving season after season.

If you run an early learning or childcare centre around Minto, Campbelltown or the wider Macarthur region and would like food-safe wicking garden beds built to last, we'd love to help you bring your outdoor learning space to life.
