This extra-long bed made an attractive and productive boundary along a shared driveway for a couple in Coledale. Facing the morning sun, it should crop well right through the year, and the trellis lets beans, snow peas, tomatoes, cucumbers and pumpkins climb and thrive rather than sprawl.
In the narrow coastal villages of the northern Illawarra, where blocks are tight and tucked between the escarpment and the sea, a long raised bed is a lovely way to define an edge while still growing a generous crop — and a shared driveway is a perfect spot for one. Running nearly four metres, it turns a plain boundary into a green, working feature.
Because it's a wicking bed, water sits in a reservoir along the base and travels up to the roots, so the full length stays evenly moist from a single top-up rather than needing a hose dragged end to end. In Coledale's sheltered, mild pocket that means steady growing with very little effort, and a trellis to take the climbers vertical and save ground space.
We use kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with a food-safe finish so a long run like this stays true and sound for years in a salt-air setting. If you've a driveway, fence line or boundary in Coledale, Thirroul or the northern Illawarra you'd like to turn into a productive garden, we'd love to help you plan it.
