A school in Bowral asked us for three wicking beds to use as a teaching aid, and it's hard to think of a better classroom than a productive vegetable garden. Wicking beds suit schools particularly well because of just how much they can teach: nutrition retention in the soil, the full lifecycle of a plant from seed to harvest, the hydrostatic transfer that draws water up through the growing medium, and all the everyday gardening skills in between.

The three raised beds are built from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with our food-safe iron-oxide finish — no cheap CCA pine near where the students grow their food — fully lined over a sealed wicking reservoir and filled with our custom-blended organic growing medium. Set in a sunny spot, they should be quite prolific, and because each bed stores its water in the base, they'll survive the school holidays without anyone needing to water them.

The Southern Highlands setting shapes how these beds earn their keep. Bowral runs cooler than Sydney, with cold winters, frosts and a shorter warm-season growing window, and a raised bed has real advantages in that climate. The lifted soil warms faster in spring than the cold Highlands ground, giving crops an earlier start and a longer run before the cold returns. Then, through the dry late-summer spells, the wicking reservoir keeps the moisture steady so the garden doesn't stall.

For the students, that means a garden that's genuinely productive across the warmer months and reliably alive when they return from the breaks — a dependable, year-to-year teaching resource rather than a patch that has to be restarted each season. They get to plant, tend and harvest real vegetables, and learn the science underneath while they do it.

Because the reservoir handles the watering, the beds need very little staff time between lessons, which makes them easy for a busy school to keep going.

Built from durable, food-safe timber, these raised garden beds are made to last through Highlands winters and years of school use. UrbanVeg builds raised garden beds and self-watering vegetable beds for schools across Bowral and the Southern Highlands. If your school would like a productive, low-maintenance garden to teach from, we'd love to help you plan it.
