6 Wicking Beds in an Acreage

A couple on a beautiful acreage near Berry asked us to install six beds to replace their old ground-level vegetable patch — and the difference in both yield and effort is considerable. Lifted into clean, purpose-blended soil, six raised beds like these produce several times what the same footprint managed at ground level, while cutting the bending, watering and weeding right back.

A set of beds is a natural fit for South Coast acreage living: it gives serious growing capacity that largely looks after itself between visits to other parts of the property. Each is a wicking bed, holding its own water in a reservoir underneath and feeding it up to the roots, so the whole plot stays evenly moist for days at a time — no small thing when you're managing a larger rural block.

Berry's mild, dependable climate is kind to vegetables, and with six beds there's room for a proper rotation: leafy greens, brassicas, root veg, tomatoes, beans and herbs all with their own space. A built-in composter keeps the soil fed from the household's own scraps, closing the loop the way a working garden should.

We build every bed from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with a food-safe finish, tough enough to stand years of weather out in the open on an acreage. If you're on land around Berry, Gerringong or the South Coast and want a productive, low-labour kitchen garden at scale, we'd love to help you plan it.
