This long border bed used an offset trellis to make the most of where the sun falls across the year, so even the sections that slip into the tree's shade for part of the day still earn their keep. Those shadier stretches are perfect for salad greens, onions, carrots and potatoes, while the sunnier end carries the heat-lovers.

A four-metre bed run along a boundary is a smart way to use an Albion Park yard — it defines the edge, screens a fence and grows a serious amount of food, all in a strip that would otherwise sit idle. Reading the sun carefully and placing the trellis off-centre means the whole length stays useful rather than just the brightest patch.

Because it's a wicking bed, the water sits in a reservoir along the base and travels up to the roots, so the entire four metres stays evenly watered from one simple top-up rather than dragging a hose end to end. In the Illawarra's mild, reliable climate that adds up to steady cropping right through the seasons with very little effort.

We build our beds from kiln-dried, vegetable-grade timber with a food-safe finish, so a long run like this stays straight and sound for years instead of warping and rotting. If you've got a fence line or boundary in Albion Park, Shellharbour or the wider Illawarra you'd like to turn into a productive border, we'd be glad to design one to suit.
