When and Where to Plant Chilli
Chilli thrives in Sydney’s warm months — plant seedlings from October once nights are reliably mild, in the sunniest spot you have. Plants set fruit through summer and, unlike most veg, a chilli will happily overwinter in a sheltered position and reward you with a much earlier crop the following year.
Why Wicking Beds Suit Chilli
Chilli hates wet feet but also resents drying out completely. A wicking bed is the sweet spot — the reservoir keeps moisture steady below while the air pockets above it let the mix drain freely, so roots stay damp without ever waterlogging. The result is steady, stress-free growth and plenty of fruit.
Getting More Fruit and Heat in your Chillis
Feed sparingly — too much nitrogen gives you lush leaves and few chillies. A little potash as flowers appear encourages fruiting, and letting the soil run slightly drier as fruit matures tends to concentrate the heat. Pick regularly to keep the plant producing, and leave a few to ripen fully if you want them at their hottest.
