The great thing about growing beans alongside your other crops is that they actually add nitrogen to the soil, just like a fertiliser. This helps other plants in the bed to thrive.
And our custom made, self watering beds are perfect for growing them. The dry surface keeps the pests and disease away, while the rich wicking blend used in our special fill gives them everything they need with little input from you.
Except of course for the picking and eating - they do need you for that!
When to Plant Beans in Sydney
Sow bush and climbing beans from September through to February, while the soil is warm. They germinate fast — usually within a week — and climbing varieties will crop for months if you keep picking. Pick beans regularly and the plant keeps producing; leave them on the vine and it slows right down. Why they’re a smart companion crop: beans are legumes, so they pull nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil through their roots. Planted alongside leafy and fruiting crops, they quietly fertilise their neighbours. In a wicking bed they’re especially easy — the steady sub-surface moisture means no flower-drop from drought stress, and the dry surface keeps slugs off the young seedlings.
