UrbanVeg was commissioned to build 8 wicking beds in Uralla to be placed adjacently to form 4 extra long beds, NSW.
After some discussion following some initial renderings, it turned out that 6 wider beds placed to form 3 long ones provided the same growing area in a more cost effective way, allowing us to build higher for less bending.

The longer bed acts as part of the fence line and will eventually have a trellis on the back - it is in a great spot for catching the sun without shading the other beds.

The wider beds have a massive amount of growing area, and will be great vegetables requiring more space such as corn, zucchini, squash as well as accommodating many rows of smaller vegetables. Each bed contains a subfloor, and is fully lined with an inlet and overflow outlet. Wicking cells are filled with volcanic rock to provide a non-organic wicking base layer. More about this method here: https://www.urbanveggiecrew.com.au/post/best-mix-to-fill-wicking-beds

We can't wait to see photos of the first few crops!

On the cold New England Tablelands around Uralla, the deep reservoir of a self-watering raised bed is a real asset through dry, frosty stretches, holding water in reserve and lifting the soil up where it warms faster than the frozen ground. Arranging the beds as long runs gives plenty of room at a comfortable height.

There is capacity here to grow a broad mix of vegetables, with a trellised run doubling as a fence line. Built from durable, food-safe timber, these raised garden beds are made to last. UrbanVeg builds raised garden beds and vegetable garden beds across Uralla and the New England region.
