A couple of keen gardeners in Seaforth wanted to convert their backyard into a working vegetable garden. They had come up with a nice layout for 6 beds. 5 were wicking beds with sub-irrigated water reservoirs, and one bed was open bottomed in order to plant a tree and other deeper rooted plants.
This couple are keen members of a local community garden, so we look forward to an incredibly high volume of vegetables being grown from this yard within a few months!
A run of raised beds like this turns a Seaforth backyard into a serious food garden, and mixing wicking and open-bottomed beds lets one design handle everything from salad greens to a fruit tree. For keen growers active in a community garden, it is a productive home base.
With the reservoirs doing most of the watering, even six beds stay manageable through the warm months. Kiln-dried and food-safe, the timber is built to last for years of serious growing. If you'd like to turn a Seaforth or Northern Beaches backyard into a proper food garden, we'd love to help you plan the layout.
