These keen gardeners in Picnic Point wanted to reduce the amount of bending involved in their gardening and maximise the growing area in a sunny courtyard of their garden without digging up the pavers.

We built two identical sided beds with the southerly side incorporating a trellis so to maximise vertical growing, and provide screening without shading the vegetables to the north.

It's always good to put trellis on the southerly aspect if possible, and running beds east to west maximises the sunshine available to each plant during the winter months.

On the blocks above the Georges River at Picnic Point, getting the most from the sun is everything, and tall beds make that easier by lifting the crops into the light. A self-watering raised bed then keeps the soil evenly moist through the warm months, so growth stays steady with little effort.

Beds like these will carry a full range of vegetables, with climbers trained up the trellis to save space. The kiln-dried, food-safe timber is built to last years on a sloping riverside block. If you've a sunny courtyard or terraced spot in Picnic Point or the St George area, we'd love to design tall, easy-to-reach beds that make the most of your sun.
