Castle Hill, NSW

A newly built house in Castle Hill was in need of some veggie beds to provide vegetables and salad for the family.

We installed two beds adjacent to each other. one will be full sun all year round, and the other partial shade in winter allowing for a variety of crops to be grown.

It is surprising how high the yields can be from our smaller beds given the amount of nutrition and readily available water that accumulates in the reservoir in the base.

The Hills District is known for its heavy clay soils, which turn boggy after rain and bake hard in summer, so a raised bed filled with a proper growing mix sidesteps the problem entirely. Placing one bed in full sun and another in winter part-shade, as we did in Castle Hill, lets a household grow a wider range across the year.
