We consulted over a number of weeks over the best place to situate this bed with regard to aesthetics, pool fence regulations, sun positioning etc. Placing a raised garden bed too close to a pool fence can breach regulations in NSW, with a 1200mm line being required from the top of the pool fence to the closest point on the bed.
In the end we placed a 2.5m wicking planter in a spot against the fence that was receiving pretty good northern sun all year round - perfect for growing sun loving fruit and veg.
There was a slight slope at this site. Installing wicking beds on a slope can be tricky. Some levelling is always required to ensure the in-ground water reservoir was level and had sufficient air gap to prevent anaerobic decomposition. We are always careful to ensure longevity and effectiveness of the reservoir as it is vital to ensure the bed wicks properly and gives the vegetable yields our customers are after.
Can't wait to see this wicking bed in Baulkham Hills bursting with home grown vegetables!
Getting the position right matters everywhere, but especially in The Hills, where clay soils and big blocks make a raised bed the easiest path to reliable growing. Lifted above that heavy ground and filled with a proper mix, a bed like this in Baulkham Hills gives roots the conditions they want.
With good northern sun and the reservoir keeping the soil moist through the hot Hills summers, it will carry a full range of vegetables and herbs. Built from durable, food-safe timber, this self-watering raised bed is made to last. UrbanVeg builds raised garden beds across Baulkham Hills and The Hills District.
